Scientific Method

There are two main things that make up the study we call science, looking and guessing.  Scientists look at and measure things to find out what is in the world.  This looking and measuring part is called Observation.  Then scientists make guesses about why they see what they do.  These guesses are called Hypothesises [hi-pah-thuh-seas].   Then the scientists figure out experiments and look for things that disprove those guesses.  If a Hypothesis [hi-pah-thuh-sis] seems to fit with reality, it gets promoted to the title of Theory.  This whole process is called the Scientific Method.

So, how do scientists use this Method?  They use their guesses to make predictions about what they expect to find if their guess works.  If their prediction comes true, they say it is Verified.  If things don’t turn out as predicted the guess is said to be Falsified.  For example, you might make a prediction that a magnet will stick to a soda can.  This can be Verified or Falsified with a simple experiment.  Big theories aren’t as simple to verify or falsify, but that gives the scientists something to keep busy studying!

We all know volcanos and water have shaped our earth, but when?

No explanation of the origin of the world and life can be scientifically verified.  All we have to go on is either our smarts or the account left to us by the Creator.  No human scientist was around to record the events of Creation.  No account of the geology, zoology, and climate of Adam and Eve’s time survived.  Only a tiny amount of information about the Global Flood was preserved.  Very little information from the time of the Ice Age made it as well.  There are little bits in the Bible, but that will have to wait for a later post!

Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.  Tell, and bring them near; yes, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.  Look unto me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Isaiah 45:20-22
